Overview
In 1942 1131 Australian soldiers attempted to defend the island of Ambon against Japanese forces. After a brutal defeat, the survivors became prisoners of war and were imprisoned both on Ambon itself, and on the island of Hainan. Only 302 men survived to return home. This presentation explores the experiences of these soldiers from their capture by the Japanese, through their experiences of Allied air attacks on their POW camp while prisoners of war, to their treatment both by their Japanese captors and by their own leadership.
