Overview

In this artist talk, Ricky Emmerton, a Kalkutungu man from northwest Queensland, will speak about Mintjapuni, an exhibition of artworks from his PhD studies at James Cook University.

“Creation started with a vast plain full of potential. The ancestral spirit beings emerged from the earth, water and sky. They began to sing, creating the world as living and vibrant, leaving their essence in the forms they created. So too, the way I was taught to paint was by starting with a dark background as the ‘vast plain’, then building up the story/image with bright colours which extends to visual effects produced by lines, dots and patterns. This is the spiritual aesthetic or mintja which is the topic of my art practice and PhD research.”

- Ricky Emmerton
